In a statement released by Clarence House, Charles and Camilla are
said to be “extremely saddened” to have learnt the news of her
death.
Prince Charles said: “Joan Rivers was an extraordinary woman with
an original and indefatigable spirit, an unstoppable sense of
humour and an enormous zest for life. She will be hugely missed and
utterly irreplaceable.”
The acid-tongued comedian and actress had a good relationship with
the royal family and has performed stand-up comedy for them at the
“We Are Most Amused” comedy gala, in aid of the Prince’s trust for
the Charles’ 60th birthday.
Ms Rivers was also one of only four Americans invited to the
wedding of Prince Charles and the then Camilla Parker-Bowles in
2005.
The 81 year old died on Thursday evening in New York, after she was
placed on life support as a result of a cardiac arrest last week
during surgery.
Joining the Prince of Wales in paying tribute were US talk show
host David Letterman, who called Rivers “a real pioneer for other
women looking for careers in stand-up comedy.”
TV show host Ellen DeGeneres also described Rivers as a leading
pioneer, saying: “She paved the way for a lot of comedians. I’m
very sad she’s gone.”
