First major details surrounding King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Coronation are revealed

The first details of the celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla have been announced.

A string of public events will take place on the weekend of May 6th 2023 to mark the moment that His Majesty and Her Majesty are crowned.

The Coronation is on the morning of Saturday May 6th 2023 with Charles III and The Queen Consort travelling to Westminster Abbey in the King’s Procession. After they are crowned, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, they will return to Buckingham Palace in the Coronation Procession. Other members of the Royal Family will be included in that procession. The Royal Family will then appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. However, no details of who that will be have yet been shared.

On Sunday May 7th 2023, there will be a Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle. The spectacle will bring together some of the biggest stars in music. There will also be a performance by the Coronation Choir which will bring together members of community singing groups from around the UK. The Virtual Choir will perform alongside them and feature singers from the Commonwealth.

Following ancient royal tradition, the evening will end with a spectacle of light. Fires have been lit for big royal events for centuries. The Coronation of King Charles III will see an element of modernisation as major landmarks around the UK are illuminated with projections, drones and lasers.

May 7th will also be the main day of the Coronation Big Lunch. This 21st century version of the traditional street party brings communities together to share food and celebrate with one another. The Big Lunch runs annually and is organised by the Eden Project. It has become part of other royal celebrations including the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Queen Camilla has been patron of the Big Lunch since 2013.

May 8th 2023 has been declared a Bank Holiday in the UK and will see a string of community focused events taking place. There will be more big lunches while the day has been nominated as ‘The Big Help Out’. It will highlight the positive impact that volunteering has in the UK and will encourage everyone to support others. It has been chosen as a way of celebrating King Charles III’s lifetime of public service.

Royal Central will bring you all the news and details of the Coronation and the celebrations in the months ahead. You’ll find lots here on the site and on our special social media @Coronation2023.
