Prince Harry was in Botswana this week on an unannounced trip to visit his patronage Rhino Conservation Botswana.
Kensington Palace confirmed to People that the Duke was visiting, saying “The Duke of Sussex is on a private working trip to Botswana, to join the Annual General Meeting for Rhino Conservation Botswana in his capacity as patron. He attended the board meeting in Maun and an RCB community project in Xarakao village.”
Rhino Conservation Botswana was created to help preserve the rhino population for future generations.
“They are a crucial part of the ecosystems that sustain our planet – and the human race. Their survival is inextricably linked to our own,” reads the charity’s official website.
“RCB has been entrusted by the Botswana government to monitor Botswana’s rhinos and ensure that they remain healthy and strong.”
The charity works with the governments of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as tourism organisations to strengthen the rhino population in the country. The charity’s long-term goal, per the website, is to see between 5,000 and 10,000 wild rhinos reintroduced to Botswana.
Prince Harry became the patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana in January 2017. He appeared in a short film for the charity at the time and spoke of his passion for conservation.
“The rhino is one of Africa’s most iconic species,” he said in the film. “The black rhino has been reintroduced into Botswana, and its numbers are increasing here, while numbers are decreasing elsewhere. If we can’t save these animals, what can we save?”
Upon becoming the patron, he said, “I’ve been lucky enough to visit Botswana for more than 20 years and am incredibly fortunate to be able to call it my second home. Being the patron of RCB is an opportunity to give something back to a country that has given me so much.”
Prince Harry took Meghan to Botswana on a camping trip shortly after they first began dating and said that was where the couple truly fell in love with each other.
Prince Harry is believed to be back in the UK now, having attended the annual general meeting and touring village on Wednesday.
