Duchess of Sussex reportedly read Roger McGough’s ‘The Vow’ during Misha Nonoo’s wedding

The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly the only guest who gave a reading at last Friday’s wedding between her fashion designer friend, Misha Nonoo, and oil executive Michael Hess.

According to reports in both The Sun and the Daily Mail, Meghan reportedly read a poem entitled “Vow” by Roger McGough during the ceremony and was given carte blanche by Nonoo to choose whatever she’d like for the reading.

“I vow to honour the commitment made this day,” the poem begins.

“Which, unlike the flowers and the cake, will not wither or decay. A promise, not to obey but to respond joyfully, to forgive and to console, for once incomplete, we now are whole.”

The poem continues:

I vow to bear in mind that if, at times
Things seem to go from bad to worse,
They also go from bad to better.
The lost purse is handed in, the letter
Contains wonderful news. Trains run on time,
Hurricanes run out of breath, floods subside,
And toast lands jam-side up.

And with this ring, my final vow:
To recall, whatever the future may bring,
The love I feel for you now.

Misha Nonoo, one of Meghan’s oldest friends, married Hess at the Villa Aurelia in Rome. Harry and Meghan attended sans Archie, as their last bit of private time before they flew to South Africa to begin their tour of the country.

Meghan met Nonoo during an Art Basel event in 2014 and said in The Tig that they hit it off almost immediately. Nonoo designed a white blouse for Meghan’s Smart Set capsule collection that was released in mid-September.

Nonoo said in an interview with Today following the collection’s release, “It’s her first official engagement after having had her baby, and it’s all about empowering women. It’s all about what she has essentially always sought to do. And I think that people should really focus on the great work that they do.”

She wouldn’t admit if she was the one who set up Harry and Meghan though, repeatedly saying “No comment” when pressed on the question.
