Coronation artists revealed as historic paintings are set to record events of majestic day

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have chosen artists to record different parts of their Coronation day on canvas.

The Coronation processions, the ceremony and the Coronation concert will all be caught in art to become a permanent record of the weekend of historic celebrations.

The Coronation ceremony has long been painted and, until the 20th century, the portraits were the only visual record of the service. Eileen Hogan has been chosen to paint the Coronation of King Charles III. She is the first female artist to be commissioned for the role. Professor Hogan is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of the Arts in London. She will create at least ten small paintings of the service and then paint a larger canvas in the months that follow as an historic record of the ceremony.

Coronation portraits are another long standing tradition. King Charles III has chosen Peter Kuhfeld to paint his Coronation State Portrait. He has painted several important commissions for the Royal Family before, including an official painting of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee on the Thames.

Queen Camilla has selected Paul Benney to paint her Coronation State portrait. He is a double winner of the People’s Choice award in the National Portrait Gallery’s BP Portrait Awards and he has previously painted Queen Elizabeth II.

Fraser Scarfe, Phoebe Stannard and Gideon Summerfield will all capture moments from the journeys to and from the Abbey including the crowds, the King’s Procession and the Coronation Procession and scenes in front of Buckingham Palace. All three are alumni of the Royal Drawing School which was set up by King Charles in 2000 to provide specialist observational drawing tuition.

The Coronation concert will be captured by Shana Pagano Lohrey, another former pupil of the Royal Drawing School. She will capture the crowds, atmosphere and ambience of the event as well as sketch some of those performing.

All of the artwork produced will become part of the Royal Collection.

The Coronation takes place on May 6th 2023 and the Coronation concert is on May 7th 2023.
