Coins bearing image of King Charles III are now in circulation

The first coins bearing the image of King Charles III have entered circulation.

The 50p went into general use in the UK on December 8th 2022.

The coins had already been sold as commemorative editions.

The 50p shows The King depicted by sculptor Martin Jennings. His Majesty faces to the left in his portrait, following the tradition that every Monarch looks in the opposite direction to their predecessor.

The image of The King’s head is surrounded by the words ”Charles III, D.G. Rex, F.D” standing for ”Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith”. The coin’s denomination of 50p is also written.

The other side features a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

All coins bearing Queen Elizabeth II remain legal tender and can continue to be used.
