The Duchess of Cambridge to host community Christmas carol service

Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge

The Duchess of Cambridge will host a Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey this holiday season as a way to celebrate the people and organisations that have stepped up to support their communities throughout the pandemic.

Kensington Palace announced that Kate has spearheaded the carol service with The Royal Foundation to showcase “how acts of kindness, empathy and love can nurture and reconnect us” and will celebrate the “life in our communities.”

Kensington Palace added that the carol service will be “a moment for the nation to come together and look back on the last eighteen months, to think not only of the unprecedented challenges that we have all faced as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to remember the positives: people and organisations pulling together in their communities, the small acts of kindness across different demographics and generations, and the unsung heroes who stepped up to help others.”

The Duchess’s carol service will feature performances by the Westminster Abbey Choir and other special guests who will give readings and perform songs that will encompass people of all faiths as well as blend traditional with modern elements.

The carol service will also feature personal reflections about how the pandemic lockdowns reminded people “about the importance of human connection and what it means, as families, communities and as a nation, to be together and to feel united to help one another through times of hardship or uncertainty.”

Guests at the carol service will include people from across the UK who have served their communities throughout the pandemic; people working in key areas that Kate and the Royal Foundation supports, including mental health, early years, and family support; and those who may have been vulnerable or isolated throughout the pandemic.

The Christmas Carol service has been developed and produced with Westminster Abbey and BBC Studios Events Productions, though the broadcast will be by ITV. The programme will air later in December.
