At the end of the final full-day visit to Belize, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, touched on his own personal experiences and how Belize played a part in him receiving the results of his A-Levels.
The Duke is on a tour of the Caribbean with the Duchess of Cambridge as they tour areas of the Commonwealth in honour of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A-Levels, also known as advanced level qualifications, are subject-based qualifications. Those qualifications can lead one to university, further study, training, or work. Typically, one normally studies three or more A levels over two years, and they are then assessed by a series of exams.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the Governor-General of Belize in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee, the Duke spoke on the moment he received his A-level results while in Belize: “This is not my first visit to Belize, as the Prime Minister mentioned. I was lucky enough to come here when I was 18 with the British Army to do some jungle training, just after I’d left school. My overriding memory of that visit was receiving the results of my final school exams.
“While I was in the jungle, it really was mortifying having my grades read out over a military radio with a whole bunch of soldiers listening in! Thankfully the results weren’t too bad. But our time with BATSUB in the jungle today brought it all flooding back. In our short time here, Catherine and I have been lucky enough to witness some of the extraordinary biodiversity that you so lovingly nurture here in your jungles and your reefs.”
The Duke received three A-levels in Geography (A), History of Art (A), and Biology (C). Attending Eton school in Windsor, he also received 12 GCSEs.
The Duke and Duchess are now on to Jamaica as they take part in their first joint tour since the global health crisis began. Marking their first official visit to the Caribbean, their tour will end in the Bahamas towards the end of the month.
