Buckingham Palace set to involve Downing Street in fallout from Oprah interview

Buckingham Palace is set to involve Downing Street in discussions about how to respond to the allegations made against The Royal Family by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

BBC Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell said he would be surprised if the Royal Household and Number 10 do not collaborate in formulating a response to the fallout from the Oprah Winfrey interview.

It is thought that the royal and political bodies will work alongside one another so their response is aligned across the spectrum.

Buckingham Palace is under intense pressure to comment on the allegations made by Harry and Meghan.

According to The Times, Buckingham Palace was ready to release a statement yesterday in an effort to de-escalate tensions.

However, the 94-year-old monarch did not grant her approval for the release of the statement, wanting to have more time for consider and formulate a response.

The Times says that the unreleased prepared statement would have “highlighted the family’s love and concern for the couple.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson watched the Oprah interview on Monday evening along with 11m other Brits.

He said in a press conference that it would be unwise for him to comment on matters involving The Royal Family.

Another reason why Buckingham Palace might be keen to work with Downing Street is because of the experience Boris Johnson’s Cabinet Secretary brings to the table.

Simon Case, the UK’s most senior civil servant, was formerly private secretary to the Duke of Cambridge.

He has a wealth of experience in working for the Royal Household and no doubt his expertise will be called upon.
