A Jubilee surprise amidst the pageantry of Trooping the Colour

People in the crowds between Buckingham Palace and Clarence House got a Jubilee surprise when the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall stopped for an unexpected chat following Trooping the Colour.

Not long after their balcony appearance on day one of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Charles and Camilla went on an impromptu walkabout to greet some of the hundreds of thousand of people in London for the festivities.

There were big cheers as the couple chatted to people celebrating the Jubilee. Some of those they shook hands with later spoke of their excitement at the surprise close up with royalty.

The Prince and the Duchess took the time to chat to people marking the Jubilee after a busy morning which had seen the heir to the throne take the salute at Trooping the Colour for the first time. Prince Charles inspected the troops at Horse Guards and then took the salute, accompanied by the Duke of Cambridge and the Princess Royal. The Queen later took a salute from troops on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the Duke of Kent at her side.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall then joined The Queen on the balcony to watch the RAF flypast. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children were also there as were the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their daughter, Lady Louise, and son, James, Viscount Severn. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra also appeared on the balcony.

Later on day one of the Platinum Jubilee weekend, Charles and Camilla starred in a special episode of EastEnders which ended with Camilla cutting a cake while Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer, raised a toast to The Queen and a special version of the famous theme music, written just for the Jubilee, played.

The Prince of Wales will lead the congregation at the Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen’s reign at St. Paul’s Cathedral on day two of the Platinum Jubilee weekend after Her Majesty decided not to attend having suffered ”some discomfort” during Trooping the Colour.
