Sophie witnesses British sporting history at Olympics

The Duchess of Edinburgh was able to witness British sporting history on day 10 of the Paris Olympics when she saw Team GB take the Gold Medal in Women’s Team Sprint in Track Cycling.

Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell, and Katy Marchant not only won the Gold Medal in Women’s Team Sprint at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome on Monday but also set a new world record for the fastest time of 45.186 seconds.

The Duchess of Edinburgh was there at the Velodrome to cheer on TeamGB and was ecstatic to see the trio’s record-setting victory, complete with loud cheers and big hug for her companion.

Sophie was first made Patron of the British Cycling Federation in late 2016 after Queen Elizabeth II stepped down from the role. She arrived in Paris on Saturday, 3 August to celebrate british athletes at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Royal Family also shared a message of support for the athletes on X and a video of a very excited Sophie cheering Emma Finucane, Katy marsh and Sophie Capewell to victory.
