The Queen of Norway will be admitted to hospital for a heart operation.
Queen Sonja, 87, is having a pacemaker fitted.
Norway’s queen will go into hospital on January 15th ahead of an operation on the 16th January. The country’s Royal Court said she would remain in hospital for a few days after the procedure.
It follows an emergency admission at the weekend when the queen’s heartbeat quickened. The condition is known as atrial fibrillation and Queen Sonja has had it for several years. This latest episode occurred while she was ski-ing and was seen as serious enough by her doctors to warrant admission to hospital.
After around 24 hours of treatment, Queen Sonja was released and returned home to the Royal Palace in Oslo.
Court officials say she is in good form while Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, sent his best wishes for a speedy recovery saying he hoped the Queen of Norway was ”ready soon for new ski-ing trips”.
Queen Sonja’s husband, King Harald, also 87, had a permanent pacemaker fitted in 2024 after becoming ill during a holiday to Malaysia.
