Norway’s Queen Sonja in hospital with heart problems as her son admits another royal is ‘seriously’ ill

Queen Sonja of Norway has been taken to hospital with heart problems and will remain there under medical care for several days.

Late on May 27, Norway’s royal court announced that Queen Sonja, 87, had been admitted to the Rigshospitalet in Oslo after experiencing heart fibrillation.

The statement also said that she was being treated for heart failure.

Doctors will keep her in hospital for ”several days’ for treatment and observation.

Norway’s queen had already been under observation at home and had cancelled several engagements.

Her admission to hospital came as her son, Crown Prince Haakon, confirmed another member of the royal family was very unwell.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Haakon said that his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was now seriously ill with pulmonary fibrosis.

She was diagnosed over seven years ago and has curtailed her public role to make her health a priority.

Doctors recently said she was a candidate for a lung transplant, given the severity of her condition. Crown Prince Haakon said that was still a consideration.

He added that, right now, his wife was ”seriously ill, and I think she has gotten a bit worse lately. So I am worried about her health.”

The heir to the throne also confirmed that the Crown Princess is using supplementary oxygen every day at the moment. On Norway’s National Day, earlier in May, the Crown Princess was seen wearing an oxygen tube as she joined her husband and younger son, Prince Sverre Magnus, to greet the procession of children who always meet the royals at the start of the annual celebrations.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has faced criticism in the past months after she was named multiple times in the Epstein files. She is also known to have stayed at Jefferey Epstein’s house. An interview she gave to explain her friendship with the convicted sex offender was badly received. Her elder son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Hoiby, is currently on trial for offences including rape, which he denies.

King Harald, who turned 89 in February, has been carrying out engagements as usual. However, his only surviving sister, 94 year old Princess Astrid, has also been in hospital after suffering ill health.
