President Donald Trump has revealed that his mother thought that King Charles was ”cute” and then joked that she actually had a crush on him.

During a speech at the official welcome for King Charles and Queen Camilla during their State Visit to the US, President Trump referred to his mother’s love of the Royal Family.

He also had more warm words about Queen Elizabeth II and explained that she was another big favourite of his late mother, Mary Trump, who was originally from Scotland.

He told his guests that ”any time the Queen was involved in a ceremony….my mother was glued to the television.”

And he added ‘I also remember her saying, very clearly….young Charles, he’s so cute….my mother had a crush on Charles, can you believe it?’

The President’s words of welcome also touched on his reverence for Queen Elizabeth II, who he has praised on many occasions. He called her a ”very, very special woman” and said she ”is very greatly missed on both sides of that mighty Atlantic.”

He also noted that she had planted a tree in the White House many years ago and then, pointing to it, said ”we see today a living symbol of this centuries-old bond…look at it now.”

The US President and First Lady welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla back to the White House after the more relaxed first welcome which took place soon after they had touched down in the US.

As the formal welcome got under way, The King and Queen’s arrival was followed by the national anthems of both countries and a 21 gun salute. King Charles and Queen Camilla then walked on to the South Lawn of the White House for more ceremonial.

King Charles and President Trump, accompanied by the the Commander of Troops, inspected a Guard of Honour.

The official welcome is the first part of a day of pageantry. Following the welcome ceremony, The King and the US President were set to meet in the Oval Office while Queen Camilla and Melania Trump were taking part in a cross education event focused on the history of the UK and the US.

King Charles is also set to address Congress while the evening will see a glittering State Banquet at the White House.
