Duke of York praises efforts to deepen security dialogue between UK and Vietnam

As a RUSI International Advisory Board member, HRH The Duke of York attended the security round table discussion between RUSI and Vietnam’s Institute for Defence and International Relations (IDIR) on Monday 23rd September 2013 while on a visit to Vietnam.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Defence Palace in Hanoi and Prince Andrew hailed the commitment of the British and Vietnamese governments to broaden and deepen the security dialogue between the two nations. His Royal Highness urged the two institutes to identify topics on which they can expand their joint research activities. IDIR’s Director Major General Dr Vu Tien Trong welcomed this opportunity and pledged to shortly conclude a memorandum of understanding with RUSI which will provide for a more permanent basis of cooperation.

The Duke of York is the president of RUSI who promote the study and discussion of developments in military doctrine, defence management and defence procurement. RUSI was founded in 1831 by the Duke Of Wellington and describes itself as the leading forum in the UK for national and international defence and security. RUSI’s patron is of course HM Queen Elizabeth II.


Also in attendance at the meeting are RUSI’s international director Dr Jonathan Eyal, Associate Fellow Dr Euan Graham, British Ambassador to Vietnam, His Excellency Dr Anthony Stokes as well as other senior members of the British Embassy.

This is not Prince Andrew’s only engagement whilst in Vietnam, he also presented the Duke of York scholarship awards at the British University Vietnam. He called upon the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam at the Offices of Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. He attended a Lunch with Vietnamese entrepreneurs at the Residence and also attended a reception to celebrate British education.

The Duke of York is the second son and third child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Born on 19th February 1960 at Buckingham Palace, he was the first child to be born to a reigning Monarch for 103 years. Prince Andrew is fifth in line to the throne and has two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
