THE ROYAL YEAR IN PHOTOS: November

The royal year has been told in many images, with some of the most symbolic moments of the past twelve months summed up in one simple photo. Here, we recall the pictures that told the tale of royal November.

Queen Elizabeth II considered it an honour to lead the nation in remembrance every November. The first Remembrance Day since her death saw Her Late Majesty at the heart of commemorations once more. The annual Festival of Remembrance paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, recalling her lifelong support for the Armed Forces as well as her own service during World War Two.

The FIFA World Cup took place in Qatar in November, a first winter runout for the most famous football tournament of all and a controversial one as debate over the country’s human rights record dominated. The timing was perhaps one reason why royal representation at matches involving European nations was lower than expected. However, King Felipe headed to Qatar for his country’s first match. He was saved any questions over a return visit when Spain, long time favourites to claim the trophy, suffered a shock exit to Morocco.

Wedding bells in Luxembourg

There was happy news from Luxembourg as the only daughter of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa announced her engagement. Princess Alexandra will marry Nicolas Bagory in April 2023 in ceremonies in Luxembourg and in France. Whether Alexandra is an auntie again by then remains unknown. Earlier in the year, the heir to the Grand Duchy, Guillaume, and his wife, Stephanie, announce they are expecting a second baby – in April. It might be a noisy wedding.
