Many members of The Royal Family hold a patronage to a bountiful amount of charities close to their heart. The Duchess of Cambridge dedicates herself to patronages and charities focusing on something very important to her, children and families.
The Art Room is focused on using art as a creative outlet to help children between the ages of 5-16 who experience behavioural and emotional troubles. Many of the children who seek therapy at The Art Room typically show withdrawn or disruptive behaviour in their regular classroom setting and need time away from their school. There are 9 Art Rooms located in schools around Oxfordshire, London and Edinburgh. The most important mission for The Art Room is that it “offers art as therapy to children and young people to raise their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence.”
The Duchess of Cambridge became a patron to the charity on 5 January 2012. The Duchess made her first appearance at The Art Room in February 2012. She visited two schools in Oxford, the Rose Hill Primary School and the Oxford Spires Academy. Since her first visit in 2012, the Duchess has attended a reception on behalf of The Art Room at the National Portrait Gallery and also opened the ICAP Art Room at Northolt High School.
On 15 January 2015, the Duchess of Cambridge made her first official engagement of the year visiting the Clore Art Room at Barlby School in Ladbroke Grove. The Clore Art Room officially opened on 1 October 2014, however The Duchess of Cambridge’s visit marks the official naming of the 9th Art Room. Her visit also celebrates the collaboration with the Clore Duffield Foundation.
