The ‘queen’ of tiaras that took a starring role at one of the biggest royal events of 2023

Queen Silvia of Sweden accompanied her husband, King Carl XVI Gustaf, to several different events throughout his Golden Jubilee weekend. At the Golden Jubilee Banquet in Stockholm, she wore one of the most significant tiaras in the Swedish collection- the Braganza Tiara.

Her Majesty has worn the Braganza Tiara for several milestone occasions in her life, so it is not surprising she chose to wear it for such an important event in her husband’s reign. She wore the tiara for her first official portrait as Queen, for her husband’s 60th birthday celebrations, for Crown Princess Victoria’s 2010 wedding, and for select state visits.

The tiara is part of the Braganza Parure, also known as the Brazilian Parure, which is made up of the tiara, a collet necklace, a floral broach, and a pair of diamond earrings.

Empress Amélia of Brazil was the original owner of the set, and she left them to her sister, Queen Josefina of Sweden, on her death. The jewels have remained in Sweden ever since, with a few trips abroad. The then-Crown Princess Louise wore the tiara to King George V’s 1910 coronation at Westminster Abbey.

The 1kg diamond tiara is particularly fitting for Queen Silvia as her mother was Brazilian. Although it is a heavy tiara, Silvia continues to carry it with grace and poise.
