Queen Anne turns Olivia Colman into an Oscars favourite

Queen Anne has won a right royal accolade for one of Britain’s favourite actresses. Olivia Colman, who plays the last Stuart monarch in the critically acclaimed film ‘The Favourite’, has been nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal.

The star, who scooped a Golden Globe earlier this month for her performance as Queen Anne, is up for Best Actress at the Academy Awards where she will go head to head with Yalitza Aparicio, Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy and bookies’ favourite Glenn Close for the prize. It’s a first Oscar nomination for Olivia Colman. Her nod is one of several for ‘The Favourite’ which is one of the most nominated films at this year’s Oscars.

‘The Favourite’ has also landed a nod for Best Picture where it will compete against Black Panther, BlackkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice for the most coveted prize of the movie awards season.

The film’s other nominations include nods for both Rachel Weisz (who plays Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough) and Emma Stone (Abigail Masham) as Best Supporting Actress as well as recognition for Yorgos Lanthimos who is up against, among others, Spike Lee and Alfonso Cuaron for the Best Director Oscar.

However, two other acclaimed portrayals of British monarchs from this year’s cinematic offerings were overlooked at the Oscar nominations. Saoirse Ronan’s turn as Mary, Queen of Scots in the film of the same name didn’t win a nomination and there was no nod, either, for her co-star, Margot Robbie, who played Elizabeth I. The film, however, was nominated in Best Costume Design and Best Make Up and Hairstyling.

The nominations were announced in Los Angeles by Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani. The Oscars will be handed out on February 24th 2019.
