Princesses on parade: why future queens of Europe on military training has become big news

Europe’s future queens are taking a different path to their thrones in the twenty first century with more and more female heirs carrying out the military training that was historically only given to their brothers.

Leonor, Princess of Asturias, is in the midst of her military training and has perhaps had the highest profile of all future queens in this role . She is in her second year of three years of training and is currently at the Naval Military Academy. Her first year of training was completed with the army and her third year will be with the air force.

Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, is currently at Harvard University after completing her undergraduate degree at Oxford University. Before attending Oxford, Elisabeth completed a year of training with the Royal Military Academy in Brussels from August 2020 to July 2021.

Second in line to the Norwegian throne, Princess Ingrid Alexandra has chosen to extend her own military training. Beginning in January 2024, she was originally completing her training in December 2024 but is now due to finish in April 2025.

Playing catch up in this regard is the heiress to Sweden’s throne. Crown Princess Victoria began a fresh phase of military training in the past few months. The Crown Princess is currently studying at the Defence College, taking her Officer Training.

As monarchies look to evolve and change with society, it is absolutely time that female and male heirs are given the same types of education. These princesses have shown that they are more than capable and that they are just as dedicated as their brothers.
