London transport chiefs advise to plan ahead for Queen Elizabeth II remembrance events

The next week or so will be an extremely busy week for London Transport and London Transport’s Commissioner, Andy Byford, is warning people to plan ahead.

In a statement, he shared London Transport’s thoughts are with the Royal Family following the death of Her Majesty The Queen. During the national mourning period, thousands are expected to travel from all over the UK, and the world, to London to pay their respects. London Transport said it’s working with partners to keep the city moving smoothly and to ensure the memorial events go off safely.

Byford said: “Roads and public transport in central London will be very busy, so we advise everyone to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys and to avoid driving where possible. All Londoners and visitors to the capital over the coming days should check before they travel using the latest real-time travel information, which is available on our TfL Go app and on tfl.gov.uk. Additional TfL Travel Ambassadors will be on hand across our network to answer questions and to provide travel advice to anyone who needs it.”

TFL said stations are expected to be busier than usual and there will be short-term safety measures such as closures, non-stopping or changes, and queuing.

In addition to those heading to Green Park to pay their respects to Her Majesty, thousands have been lining The Mall and the area around Victoria Fountain to get a glimpse of the new King and Queen Consort as they travel to and from the palace.

Up to one million people are expected to join the queues to pay their respects to Her Late Majesty during the Lying in State which starts on September 14th 2022 and ends in the early hours of September 19th 2022, just ahead of the State Funeral.
