A famous French palace and the royal mistress who once made it her home

The Élysée Palace played host to several royals ahead of the Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted a reception on the day of the opening ceremony to officially receive the heads of state attending the 2024 Paris games. He was joined by his wife, Birgitte Macron.

Several different monarchies were represented at the reception: King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, King Felipe of Spain, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, and Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck of Bhutan were all in attendance.

French nobleman Louis Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne originally built the Élysée Palace in the early eighteenth century; the building was built in the Baroque style.

Several different people purchased the property throughout the eighteenth century, including King Louis XV’s long-term mistress, Madame de Pompadour.

Bathilde d’Orléans, Duchess of Bourbon, purchased the home in 1787 and renamed it as the Élysée Palace. She only was able to live in the palace for a few years, as it was seized during the French Revolution.

Emperor Napoleon I acquired the palace in 1808 but would sign his abdication there in 1815.

In 1848, the Élysée Palace was officially named as the home of the French President, as well as where the Council of Ministers meets.
