The King of Sweden sends poignant telegram to Queen Margrethe of Denmark on the day of her abdication

The King of Sweden has sent a very special message to Queen Margrethe of Denmark on the day of her abdication.

With just hours to go until the Danish monarch signs away her throne in favour of her son, Frederik, Sweden’s royals have conveyed their thanks for her reign.

In an open letter, King Carl XVI Gustaf said he wanted to ‘’express his warm thanks for the strong co-operation’’ they had enjoyed over the years.

And he praised his friend and relation in the highest terms, saying ‘’as Denmark’s Queen, you have been the guarantor of the closeness and affection that prevails between our countries and our dynasties.’’

He ended with a flourish, noting that ‘’on this day of history, my family and I wish you every happiness and prosperity in the future.’’

The Swedish Royal Family were told in advance of Margrethe II’s plans to abdicate.

The Queen of Denmark made the announcement in her New Year’s Eve speech. She will formally hand the throne over in a Council of State on January 14th 2024 at 2pm when she signs a Declaration of Abdication. From that moment, her son becomes King Frederik X.

Margrethe is abdicating on the 52nd anniversary of her accession. Following her departure, King Carl XVI Gustaf will become the longest reigning monarch in Europe – he marked fifty years on the throne in September 2023.
