King Carl XVI Gustaf awarded the 2024 Solliden Prize on Thursday and was joined by Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria.
The Solliden Prize is awarded each year to “a person who has made a recognised effort or achievement in any area or has taken measures or taken initiatives that promote the island’s interests and development or which have made contributions to Öland’s pious for a long time,”
The 2024 prize was awarded to botanist Ulla-Britt Andersson to celebrate her accomplishments at a ceremony outside of Solliden Palace. Swedish soul and hip-hop artist Adée also performed.
The Queen and Crown Princess of Sweden both wore traditional Öland folk costumes for the ceremony with all three senior royals smiling throughout the ceremony.
King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia spend most of their summer at Solliden Palace in Öland and are often joined by many family members throughout the summer. It was originally built in 1906 for Crown Princess Victoria (who would become Queen Victoria in 1907 upon her husband’s accession).
King Carl Gustaf owns Solliden Palace privately. The palace is open to visitors, including the gardens that host an exhibition each summer.
