Prince Julian christened at Drottningholm Palace

Sweden’s Prince Julian has been christened in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace this afternoon.

Bishop Johan Dalman and the Royal Court’s pastor, Michael Bjerkhagen, conducted the service.

Attendees began arriving for the noon service at 11 am, and the last to arrive were the man of honour, his parents, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and his brothers, Princes Alexander and Gabriel.

Those in attendance included King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Princess Madeleine. Chris O’Neill, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne. Government officials also attended; however, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven did not attend. Minister of Justice, Morgan Johansson, attended in his place. The county of Halland’s governor Brittis Benzler also attended. The family of Queen Silvia and Princess Sofia were also in attendance, as were personal friends of Carl Philip and Sofia.

During the service, Psalms 289 and 201 were sung, and a new song, “Little beautiful you” by Charlotte Runevret and Anders Neglin, was also performed. At the end of the christening, the King presented Julian with his small Order of the Seraphim sash. Julian will not wear the sash again until he is an adult.

Unlike the recent baptisms of his cousins and siblings, Julian’s ceremony was not aired live on television. Instead, SVT was inside the Royal Chapel and recorded the service. They will air a short summary tomorrow.

After the religious service, the royals and their guests posed before the press outside the Royal Chapel. They then went to Drottningholm Palace for a reception and lunch.

Yesterday, the Royal Court announced Julian’s godparents. They are close friends of Sofia, Johan and Stina Andersson; schoolmate of Carl Philip, Jacob Högfeldt; maternal cousin of Carl Philip, Patrick Sommerlath; and Sofia’s co-founder of Project Playground, Frida Vesterberg; they all participated in the service.

Official photos will be released in the coming days, and a summary video will air on SVT on Sunday at 6.15 pm.

Prince Julian, Duke of Halland, was born on 26 March 2021 and is seventh in line to the Swedish throne.
