King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia receive third dose of coronavirus vaccine

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden

The King and Queen of Sweden received their first Covid-19 vaccine in January this year, and the second vaccine sometime in the spring. Now it has been confirmed that the Swedish king and queen have received their third dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

In a comment to the Swedish magazine “Svensk Damtidining”, information manager at the royal court, Margareta Thorgren, confirmed that the royals have gotten their third vaccine. However she does not want to make any further comments on the details around the event. The royal couple’s third vaccination fully follows the Swedish Public Health Agency’s recommendations for people aged over 65 years old.

Following receiving the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine King Carl XVI Gustaf said: “It is my hope that everyone who has the opportunity to be vaccinated chooses to do so, so that together and as soon as possible we can get through this difficult time”.

The news comes just days after it was announced that King Albert and former Queen Paola of Belgium had come into close contact with someone who later tested positive for the virus. The couple took part in events marking King’s Day in Brussels on November 15th 2021. The next morning the news came that Senate President Stephanie D’Hose, had fallen ill and tested positive for Covid-19, only a few hours after she had met Albert and Paola. However, safety distances were maintained and facemasks were worn, and King Albert and Queen Paola were both fully vaccinated.

The Swedish king and queen are not the first royals who receives their third dose of vaccine. Earlier in November it became known that King Harald and Queen Sonja had received their third dose. The information was shared on the evening of November 1st 2021 by the royal court. The following statement was made: “His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen have today received the third dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus. The royal couple received the first dose on 13 January and the second dose three weeks later”. The King’s 88 year old sister, Princess Astrid, was also vaccinated at the same time.
