King and Queen of Sweden open new Jubilee exhibition at Solliden

The King and Queen of Sweden have opened a new Jubilee exhibition at Solliden Palace.

On Wednesday, 17 May, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia opened a new exhibition in the gardens of the Swedish summer palace. The exhibition is known in English as the “Jubilee exhibition in glass.”

This is the third year that an exhibition has been staged in Solliden’s English gardens; this year’s collection features five different artists: Bertil Vallien, Åsa Jungnelius, Johan Röing, Ellen Ehk Åkesson and Markus Åkesson.

The King shared his thoughts on the exhibition in a speech:

It is a troubled world and time we live in. Here I hope that the visitors will have a moment of peace but also draw strength. The exhibition should give new impressions and experiences that enrich.

I think pure magic occurs when the glass meets the greenery of the park, it shimmers in the light, and we see both the glass and the vegetation in a new way. It becomes fairytale-like and almost a little mysterious.”

Solliden Palace is on Öland and is the only property His Majesty owns personally. He inherited the palace from his mother, and the Swedish Royal Family continues to use it during the summer. Notably, the family publicly celebrates Victoriadagen there, a day to celebrate Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday each July.

The King and his family are celebrating his Golden Jubilee throughout 2023 with different events. In addition to marking The King’s 50 years on the Swedish throne, 2023 is also the 500th anniversary of Sweden becoming an independent state.

Visitors can visit the English gardens and see the exhibition from 11 May to 1 October while it is open. From 11 May to 25 June, the gardens are open to visitors between 10:00 and 17:00. From 26 June to 31 August, they are open between 11:00 and 18:00, and from 1 September to 11 October, they are open between 11:00 to 16:00.
