Jubilee year begins in Sweden with new portrait of the King released

The jubilee year has begun in Sweden for King Carl XVI Gustaf, and the Royal Court released a new portrait of His Majesty as the new year began.

The Royal Court released the new photo, taken by Thron Ullberg, showing His Majesty in the Royal Palace of Stockholm’s Rikssalen (Hall of State). He is pictured beside the SIlver Throne used in Queen Kristina’s coronation in 1650.

King Carl Gustaf is wearing his Admiral uniform with chains of the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of the Sword, the Order of the North Star and the Order of Vasa; the King has the Order of the Dannebrog chain around his neck, which is only presented to the closest relatives of the Danish monarch. He also wears other Swedish and Norwegian commemorative medals on his uniform.

The image also features on Postnord’s stamps being issued this year.

King Carl Gustaf is Sweden’s longest-reigning monarch of all time, and celebrations are set to take place throughout 2023 to mark his Golden Jubilee year.

The first celebration is later this month when a dinner is held at the Royal Palace with representatives from all of Sweden’s counties and their governors.
