Crown Princess Victoria promoting digitisation on UN visit to Bangladesh

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Crown Princess Victoria has begun an official visit to Bangladesh together with the United Nations, kicking off a four-day visit with engagements related to technology.

The future queen arrived in the capital city of Dhaka on Monday, quickly stopping to see the technological progress made by the South Asian country at an event called ‘Innovate Together for #ZeroDigitalDivide.’

According to the UN Development Programme, the event showed ways that Bangladesh is modernising its tech through “Digital Centres, the National Helpline 333, e-commerce platforms, and freelancer support programs” that empower young people and entrepreneurs and creating inclusive growth across the socio-economic barriers.

The UNDP website states that Crown Princess Victoria’s visit will also include field visits to learn how the push for digitisation has reduced poverty in rural areas; and how women and youth entrepreneurs are creating initiatives to tackle climate change issues in more vulnerable areas of the country.

“The Crown Princess’ visit is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of Bangladesh’s development journey and strengthen partnerships towards a resilient and inclusive future,” Ulrika Modéer, the UN Assistant Secretary General and Director of External Relations at the UNDP, said in a statement on the UNDP website.

The bulk of Crown Princess Victoria’s visit will take place in Dhaka, though field visits will take place in more rural areas.

Crown Princess Victoria was named a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador last October, and at the time, she said: “It is a great honor to have been named Goodwill Ambassador for UNDP. It gives me additional opportunities to support the work for the Sustainable Development Goals. I look forward to immersing myself in UNDP’s work to prevent many of the difficult challenges the world faces today that affect people all over the world.”

Crown Princess Victoria has been affiliated with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals since 2016, having previously served as a Goodwill Ambassador from 2016 to 2019, and since 2019 as an Advocate Emerita focused on promoting the goals related to fishing, the sea and sustainability.

Crown Princess Victoria’s visit to Bangladesh continues through Thursday.
