Crown Princess Victoria hears about growing resistance to key medicine

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel have participated in a high-level gathering focused on combating antibiotic resistance at the Scandinavian XPO in Arlandastad, held in connection with Sweden’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to all public health authorities, antibiotic resistance is a serious and growing public health problem. One thing working against resistance is international and national cooperation.

Her Royal Highness spoke at the gathering, saying: “It is my great pleasure to open this high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance. This is an agenda that affects all of us. And it has been a long-standing matter of concern to myself and to Prince Daniel. Therefore, it is both pleasing and encouraging to join you in today’s important discussions, gathering prominent participants from different sectors.”

The Swedish Crown Princess added: “I am confident that today’s high-level meeting will be a possibility to share knowledge, inspire continued interaction and push development – across borders, across areas of expertise, across all parts of our society. I would like to welcome you all to Stockholm and Sweden! Prince Daniel and I are looking forward to following today’s discussions.”

Sweden has been actively addressing the issue of antimicrobial resistance, particularly antibiotic resistance, for a long time; it has been taking measures to combat the development of resistance and its impact within Sweden and outside its borders.

Sweden is set to assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union, also referred to as the Council of Ministers, in the spring of 2023. During this six-month period, Sweden will take charge of planning and directing the council’s efforts while serving as its representative in communication with other EU institutions.
