Crown Princess Victoria criticised toward her choice of dog

As 2022 comes to an end, Royal Central takes a look back at our ten most popular posts of the year. Our eighth most read article was by Oskar Aanmoen on the criticism surrounding Crown Princess Victoria’s choice of dog. Originally published on 3rd January 2022, the full post can be read below.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has been criticised for her choice of dog.

When Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel bought a small dog for the family in 2020, many were full of praise as a pet can contribute to a lot of happiness to a family.

Therefore, when the first pictures of the adorable puppy, Rio, were released, many posted supportive comments on the Royal Family’s social media. Nevertheless, not everyone was satisfied. Rio is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a Poodle. The poodle has been very popular dog for mixed breeding in recent years in Sweden. The most common mixes are Poodles with Labrador or Cocker Spaniel, but the Cavalier mix has also become popular.

This caused, among other things, the Swedish Kennel Club to react. In an open letter, their chairman urged the Crown Princess to think more about the breeding she supports by obtaining a mixed breed.

In an interview with the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet that was published on New Year’s Day, Crown Princess Victoria responded to the criticism for the first time.

The article’s author, journalist Ylva Lagercrantz Spindler, said: “The Crown Princess does not seem to have taken on condemnatory views.

On the contrary, she shows curious interest when I tell her that we also have a mixed breed, a mix between Spanish Water Dog and Labrador.”
