Queen Sofía in the spotlight as King Felipe continues his isolation

Queen Sofía of Spain has presided over the meeting of the Renal Foundation Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo, hosted to celebrate the entity’s 40th anniversary.

Her Majesty arrived at the Rosewood Villa Magna Hotel, in Madrid, on February 17 2022 where she was welcomed by local dignitaries.

The Queen opened the meeting by introducing the President of the Patronage of the Foundation, Isabel Entero, who assessed the past 40 years, highlighting targets reached and contributions to research.

A video was also projected to briefly retrace the story of the Foundation’s 40 years, before more interventions from representatives from the Foundation and the handing of a children’s book to Queen Sofia.

The book is called “Renata mi nefróloga” (“Renata my nephrologist”), and has been written under the sponsorship of the Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo Foundation to generate awareness about kidney illnesses even in young children.

The event concluded with a meeting that Queen Sofía held with all people attending the event and a photo opportunity.

The Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo Foundation was created on the 15th of February 1982, with the aim of making treatment more accessible for patients and to offer them a more comprehensive approach to therapy.

The following step for the Foundation was the creation of an employment centre to offer jobs to patients going through kidney therapy, to make the coexistence of work and such an invasive and time intensive therapy possible.

The next logical steps were the opening of international cooperation, with Ecuador being the first country, and the investment on research about the origins and potential treatments for kidney diseases.

Queen Sofía carried out this engagement just two days after the Royal Household announced that King Felipe had tested positive again for Covid, and would therefore cancel all events for the week, including a graduation ceremony for diplomats.
