Queen Letizia presides over UNICEF Spain meeting with focus on mental health

Queen Letizia of Spain has taken part in a work meeting for UNICEF Spain, of which she is Honorary President, to recap the year that just concluded and take a look at the goals for the future.

Her Majesty arrived at the UNICEF Spain headquarters in the morning of Wednesday, 2 February, and was welcomed by the organisation’s authorities.

Once seated in the meeting room, the Queen listened attentively as the President of the Spanish Committee gave his speech, welcoming everyone before recapping the main events of 2021 and taking a look at the 2022 objectives.

It was then the turn of UNICEF Spain’s Communications Director, who focussed her attention on the “Mental Health Global Strategy” that UNICEF is deploying around the world to combat the nefarious effects of the pandemic and quarantines and isolations on children’s mental health.

This has been a point also raised by other local UNICEF units, and mental health has been gaining increasing spotlight in the world of medicine and therapy, which, in turn, makes it the focus of more than one royal’s work. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark are only a few examples of royals who have attended mental health-focused panels over the last few weeks.

Queen Letizia has been Honorary President of UNICEF Spain since 2015 when she received the baton from her mother-in-law Queen Sofía, who had covered the position for four decades before becoming Queen Emerita.

Since then, Her Majesty has taken part in many meetings and events related to the organisation, including, most recently, the celebration of UNICEF Spain’s 75th anniversary in December 2021, where she met with high profile Spanish celebrities, including singer David Bisbal.

This latest engagement comes as Queen Letizia and King Felipe have returned from their first official visit to Austria on Monday.
