Princess Leonor makes land for the first time in weeks as naval training takes her to Brazil

Princess Leonor has landed in Brazil after over a month at sea for her naval training.

The Princess of Asturias set sail from Spain early in January as she began a six month stint on board a training ship as part of her year with Spain’s naval forces.

The future queen has been learning the ropes, quite literally, as she has joined other trainees on a month’s journey to South America.

They’re on board the training ship, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, which left Spain on January 11th 2025 where King Felipe and Queen Letizia shed tears as they watched their elder daughter leave for half a year away from home.

The ship has now made its first stop, in Salvador in Brazil. Spain’s royal family have shared plenty of photos of Leonor at sea and there was a new look at her in training as the Juan Sebastián de Elcano sailed into the bay.

Leonor was among the crew as the final approach began.

She later joined her fellow cadets on board to raise their hats in greeting as they reached the dock.

The princess has another five months of training to undertake and there has been speculation the latest phase of her military training could see her meet Donald Trump. When her father, now King Felipe, spent time with the navy his tour of duty included a stop at the White House where he met the then US President, Ronald Reagan.

Princess Leonor underwent a year of training with the army which ended in the summer of 2024. Once her stint with Spain’s navy is over, she will do a year with the country’s air force before completing her time with the military.
