Queen Mathilde of Belgium has joined the Luxembourg royals in Hainaut, Belgium today for the funeral of Count Philippe de Lannoy, the father of Princess StĂ©phanie, the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, and a Belgian born noble. Queen Mathilde represented her husband, who is a first cousin of the Princess’s father-in-law, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
The funeral service was held at Frasnez-Lez-Anvaing and the Queen was greeted by the Prince de Ligne as she arrived. She joined the Grand Duke, the Hereditary Grand Duchess, the Hereditary Grand Duke and Princess Alexandra and Prince Louis of Luxembourg, alongside the de Lannoy family.
Count Philippe de Lannoy died on 10 January 2019 at the age of 96. Princess StĂ©phanie, the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg is the youngest of his eight children with Alix della Faille de Leverghem. The day after his death, the Grand Ducal house released the following statement, “It is with great sadness that Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess announce the death of the Count of Lannoy, father of the Hereditary Grand Duchess, which occurred on January 10, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess and all the Grand Ducal family join in the grief of Princess StĂ©phanie, Prince Guillaume, and the family of Count de Lannoy. Their thoughts, their prayers and their great affection are with them.”
Princess StĂ©phanie, born Countess StĂ©phanie de Lannoy, is married to the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Prince Guillaume. Shortly before their wedding in 2012, Princess StĂ©phanie’s mother Countess Alix de Lannoy, born Alix della Faille de Leverghem, died unexpectedly after suffering a stroke. She was still only 70 years old. Princess StĂ©phanie was the youngest of eight children of the Count and Countess de Lannoy. Her elder siblings are: Count Jehan de Lannoy (born 1966), Count Christian de Lannoy (born 1968), Countess Nathalie de Lannoy (born 1969), Countess GaĂ«lle de Lannoy (born 1970), Count Amaury de Lannoy (born 1971), Count Olivier de Lannoy (born 1974) and Countess Isabelle de Lannoy (born 1976).
Princess StĂ©phanie and Prince Guillaume married in a civil ceremony at the Town Hall on 19 October 2012, followed by a religious wedding on 20 October at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg. Princess StĂ©phanie and Prince Guillaume moved to London in late 2018 where Prince Guillaume intends to acquire additional expertise for his future responsibilities. Princess StĂ©phanie is studying art history at the Sotheby’s Institute. She is the patron of several art-related charities as well as the President of the MusĂ©e d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM).
