Who is Prince Sverre Magnus?

The youngest child of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit turns 18 today, but who is the man who ranks third in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne?

Prince Sverre Magnus was born on 3rd December 2005 at the National Hospital in Oslo to Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

As the grandson of King Harald, the Prince is third in the Norwegian line of succession behind his father and older sister, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (b. 2004). His older half-brother, Marius Borg Høiby is not in the line of succession as he is Mette-Marit’s child from a previous relationship.

Magnus, as his family commonly calls him, was christened on 4th March 2006 in the Royal Chapel by Bishop Ole Kristian Kvarme. His godparents are his paternal grandmother, Queen Sonja, his maternal uncle Espen Høiby, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Princess Rosario of Bulgaria, and two family friends, Bjørn Stensland and Marianne Gjellestad.

The Prince began his education in Asker in 2007 before entering first grade in 2011 at Jansløkka School; from 2014-2020, His Highness attended the Montessori School in Oslo. He is currently studying under the Information Technology and Media Production education programme at the upper secondary school Elvebakken.

Prince Sverre Magnus’s Confirmation occurred on 5th September 2020 at Asker Church.

He is said to enjoy surfing with his family, alpine skiing and BMX sports.

As he is not expected to be monarch, the Prince is not expected to undertake many royal duties on behalf of the Crown; it is thought he will have a similar role within the monarchy as his great-aunt, Princess Astrid, and his aunt, Princess Martha Louise before the latter stopped undertaking royal duties.
