The public tax figures for 2021 in Norway have been published, making last year’s income, assets and taxes for large parts of the Norwegian population made public. However, some are left off the tax lists, including the senior members of the Norwegian Royal Family.
Norway is unique in that it is public how much everyone earns and has in wealth; however, that has been reduced and criticised over the past few years. You can still search for anyone to see that person’s income and assets. There is a record of all searches, and the person you search for is notified of who wants to see their details. Nevertheless, most newspapers freely make available the details of those who earn the most and own the most in each individual municipality.
King Harald, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon are exempt from paying taxes and are exempt from the lists as they receive appanage from the state. However, we get an insight into the finances of Princess Märtha Louise, Princess Astrid, the King’s older sister and the Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby.
The figures for 2019 showed that Princess Märtha Louise earned around NOK 733,000. Then she was also listed with zero assets, a significant decrease from the previous year.
In 2020, the Princess increased her fortune to 16.7 million NOK ( or about 1,370,435 GPB) in assets. In addition, she earned around 4.4 million NOK.
For 2021, things look a little different for Märtha Louise. Her income has decreased by several million NOK. The new figures show that she had an income of just over 564,000 NOK, about 46,283 GBP, compared to the previous year’s 4.4 million NOK. The Princess’s assets have also decreased, from 16.7 million NOK to 13.1 million NOK, about 1,075,051 GBP.
For last year, it appears that Marius Borg Høiby, like Princess Märtha Louise, has had a decrease in income. He earned 30,000 NOK last year (2,462 GBP) and has a fortune of 57,000 NOK (4,678 GBP). He was previously an apprentice at a motorcycle workshop. In February this year, he started the company Maizen Custom, which deals with maintaining and repairing motorcycles.
King Harald`s older sister, Princess Astrid, income has been relatively stable recently. As a result, she lost her style of Royal Highness, and her apanage from the state disappeared when she married.
However, twenty years ago, it was revealed that Princess Astrid had been granted an honorary pension from the state. In 2021, she had a small income jump, from 892,000 NOK to 932,000 (76,485 GBP). Her fortune has shrunk from 33 million NOK to 30 million NOK (about 2.5 million GBP).
