Another European royal has reached a milestone birthday: Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway turns 18-years-old on 3rd December, and the Norwegian Royal Court has released a new birthday portrait.
The young prince features in a portrait by Dusan Reljin on behalf of the Norwegian Royal Court.
On Friday, King Harald and Queen Sonja will host a birthday luncheon for their grandson. Prince Sverre Magnus will be fêted by his parents, his older sister Princess Ingrid Alexandra, his aunt Princess Märtha Louise, and his great-aunt Princess Astrid at the Royal Palace.
Queen Sonja is expected to give a speech celebrating her grandson.
Much like when Prince Christian of Denmark celebrated his 18th birthday in October, Prince Sverre Magnus’s birthday celebrations will also include representatives from youth organisations. Norwegian officials will also be included.
Prince Sverre Magnus is third in line to Norway’s throne, behind his father and older sister. Unlike them, however, he is not a member of the Royal House and is not expected to take on an official role.
Earlier this year, Crown Prince Haakon spoke of his son’s future, saying that Prince Sverre Magnus will “have to find his own way in life. It is Ingrid who is going to take over the role. Magnus will probably be involved in something, but I probably don’t think he will have an official role or a full-time position. That is not the plan. So, he has to find something he wants to do in life.”
The young prince is in a similar position to his aunt, Princess Märtha Louise, who, for years, carried out engagements and held patronages but never held a traditional, formal role on behalf of the Norwegian Royal Family.
