King Harald of Norway has left hospital after several weeks of treatment.
The Norwegian monarch, 87, was discharged from the Rigshospitalet in Oslo on March 14th and went home to the Royal Palace where he will continue to recuperate.
The Royal Court said King Harald would be on sick leave until at least April 8th 2024 and his son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon, would continue to carry out all his constitutional duties in the meantime.
The king was discharged soon after planned surgery to fit a permanent pacemaker.
Harald V was taken ill during a holiday to Malaysia at the end of February and admitted to hospital there where he was initially treated for an infection. He later had a temporary pacemaker fitted to allow him to make the long flight home.
On his return, doctors decided he needed a permanent pacemaker – a small device which helps regulate the beating of the heart.
King Harald and Queen Sonja issued a message of thanks for all the support they had received as His Majesty fell ill and needed treatment.
Crown Prince Haakon had already taken up the role of regent, as is usual in Norway when the monarch is on holiday, and will continue with those duties until his father is fully recovered.
