The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to impact the travel arrangements of Europe’s royal families. The latest news is that King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway have decided to cancel their holiday and return home ahead of time. The news was first announced by Norwegian state television on Monday evening. It was not expected for the King and Queen to return to Norway before the middle of next week.

The news came on the same night it became known that Norway will donate 2,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine. This is in addition to donations already made of 5,000 helmets, 1,500 bulletproof vests and 1,000 protective masks.

It has not been known where the royals have been on holiday, so the exact time Their Majesties will return to Norway is uncertain. The King will now lead the council of state in Oslo on Friday.

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess also interrupted their family holiday. This was done so that Crown Prince Haakon could come home and take care of the head of state’s position as Crown Prince Regent. The entire royal family has been abroad to celebrate King Harald’s 85th birthday.

When the King is away, a Regent is in place, even if only for a few days to increase Norway’s preparedness. If there is a need, only the sitting monarch of Norway has the opportunity to order Norway’s forces in combat mode. As King Harald is still abroad and Crown Prince Haakon is the legal Regent. The Crown Prince currently has the authority to give necessary orders to the military in Norway.
