Queen Máxima is a bonafide style maven prone to bold colours, loud patterns, big jewellery and to-die-for accessories and its always a treat to see her fashion sense in action. Whether she’s opening museums or financial conferences or welcoming heads of state from around the world, you know you’re going to see something memorable. Let’s take a look back at some of Queen Máxima’s fashion hits this year.
Glittering for the holidays
It’s a rule, isn’t it? For holiday engagements choose sequins, sparkly, and dark. Queen Máxima checked off all three boxes when she attended the 2024 Christmas Music Gala hosted by one of her patronages, Music in the Classroom. With a tousled bouffant-style hairdo, sleek black blouse and wide-legged grey/blue sequin Natan trousers, the Queen of the Netherlands definitely looked holiday appropriate!
Stunning in Singapore
Queen Máxima attended the Singapore FinTech Festival in early November and her fashion was on point. While the Oscar de la Renta tweed dress suit she wore on the first day was perfectly retro and regal, I can’t stop thinking about the champagne-and-lime Natan dress she wore for a series of conference hits and government meetings.
That….je ne sais quoi
Who else but Queen Máxima? For a night out at the opera with her mother-in-law, Princess Beatrix, Queen Máxima showed up wearing a Saloni dress of polka dots in competing, clashing, and complementary colours. But since she was attending a baroque concert, the style was likely perfectly suited for the occasion.
Diplomatic dressing
In early June, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima hosted a dinner for the diplomatic corps, and Queen Máxima was dripping in beautiful shades of berry red. In a long-sleeved, drop-waisted berry red Natan gown complemented by the Ruby Peacock Tiara and beautiful red heels, all eyes were on Maxima that evening.
An icy blue lunch look
When the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad Al Thani, came to the Netherlands for an official visit at the end of June, luncheon was on the schedule. Queen Máxima’s gorgeous icy blue Natan skirt paired with a pussy-bow blouse and tan hat and accessories were perfectly suited for the early summer afternoon.
Queen Maxima is gala gorgeous
In September, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Catharina-Amalia hosted a gala dinner for the Council of State. Once again, Queen Máxima turned to an icy blue colour palette for the evening—leaving the va-va-voom navy blue for her daughter. Her strapless, lacy Valentino gown looked gorgeous!
A pretty blue pantsuit
Queen Máxima also knows how to wear a stylish pantsuit, and this icy blue Max Mara suit was a hit for a visit to Hollands Kroon in May.
Wrapping up the Spanish State Visit with a bow
While Queen Máxima’s evening gown at the Spanish State Banquet the previous night was superb, I can’t stop thinking about this beautiful dress she wore at King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s return reception the following night. A beautiful muted emerald green sequined dress by Jan Taminiau featured an oversized bow on the shoulder was the perfect look for Queen Máxima.
Put a hat on!
When Queen Máxima reopened the renovated Museum Hindeloopen in June, she wore a gorgeous red dress, but what caught my eye was the Fabienne Delvigne turban hat! Queen Máxima’s hat style is almost unrivalled, and this was certainly a hit in 2024.
Head to toe in a favourite designer
If there was a competition as to which Benelux royal loved Natan more, it’d be pretty neck-in-neck between Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima. They both love the designer and both look fantastic in Natan (hence so many fashion hits for Queen Máxima this year featuring the designer), and for my money, this is one of Queen Máxima’s best looks. On a visit to open the new Dushi Huis in Waalwijk, Queen Máxima wore an oversized Natan coat in royal blue over an emerald green Natan dress. It’s a combination not many could pull off, but that’s the magic of Queen Máxima!
