Dutch royals to attend Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip

Members of the Dutch Royal Family will be in attendance at the Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip on 29 March.

The Royal House of the Netherlands announced that King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix would make the trip to London to attend the service at Westminster Abbey.

After Prince Philip’s death, the King and Queen released a statement, saying: “It is with great respect that we remember His Royal Highness Prince Philip. Throughout his long life, he committed himself with dedication to the British people and to his many duties and responsibilities. His lively personality never ceased to leave an unforgettable impression. Our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and all the members of the Royal Family.”

The thanksgiving service is set to take place just a few days before the first anniversary of his death on 9 April.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden are also scheduled to attend. Other royals from reigning European houses are expected to send representatives.

Carl Gustaf released a message after Philip’s death, saying: “The Queen and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip has been a great friend of our family for many years, a relationship which we have deeply valued. His service to his country will remain an inspiration to us all. We offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen, The Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom.”

The British Royal Family is expected to be out in full force for the service. However, it has been confirmed that the Duke of Sussex will not travel from the United States for his grandfather’s thanksgiving service.

There will also be a significant presence from the charities and organisations the Duke of Edinburgh supported during his life.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on 9 April 2021 at Windsor Castle. His funeral took place at St George’s Chapel on 17 April.

Due to COVID regulations, only 30 people could be in the church for his funeral. The Duke did not want a state funeral and had a wish that it be small-scaled. However, had the world not been in a global health crisis, some royals from Europe would have been expected to have attended.
