Tears in Monaco as Princess Charlene marks special moment in royal family life

Princess Charlene of Monaco leads her royal family in celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the accession of her husband, Prince Albert

There were tears at the Prince’s Palace in Monaco as Prince Albert and Princess Charlene marked a very special moment.

The Prince is celebrating twenty years of rule this summer and on a balmy summer’s evening, he was joined by his wife and their twins for a party at his royal palace which saw him overcome with emotion.

Albert II was paying tribute to his family and all those across Monaco in a heartfelt speech when he began to cry. There was another touching moment when the Sovereign Prince appeared overwhelmed by emotion as he hugged his heir, Prince Jacques, and second in line to the throne, Princess Gabriella.

Princess Charlene led the applause for her husband and embraced him warmly as the celebrations continued.

She was also at the front of the cheers as a huge cake was brought out to mark the special anniversary.

The multi tiered spectacular was covered in red and white macarons, a nod to the colours of Monaco’s flag. Albert took the first taste before it was shared among the many people who had come along to party.

Albert, Charlene and their children met many of them as they spent a long time shaking hands and chatting with the crowds that had gathered for the celebations.

Albert became Prince of Monaco in April 2005 on the death of his father, Prince Rainier III. A series of events marking twenty years of his reign take place in Monaco this year.
