Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume tests positive for Covid

The Grand Ducal Court has announced that Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume tested positive for Covid-19. The news comes a week after his father, Grand Duke Henri, was confirmed to have the virus.

The Crown Prince self-isolated following a positive self-test and then confirmed his diagnosis with a PCR test. According to the Grand Ducal Court, the 40-year-old heir to the throne is symptom-free and doing well. He will resume all official duties after his period of isolation ends.

In Luxembourg, those who test positive for the coronavirus must self isolate at home for ten days from the start of their symptoms or, if they are asymptomatic, from the date of their positive test.

Meanwhile, Grand Duke Henri has continued to carry out his duties as Head of State and is suffering from mild symptoms of the virus.

The illness has impacted several other European royal families in the new year, with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden both testing positive for Covid-19 on 4 January and Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel in the days following.

While the Swedish royals all are reported to have mild symptoms, King Constantine II of Greece was admitted to hospital with Covid-19 on 8 January. The 83-year-old, who served as king from 1964 to 1973, has suffered from various health issues in recent years, including a December 2021 hospitalisation for a stroke.

In December 2021, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Princess Anne’s husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, were ill with Covid-19 but have since recovered.
