King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima offer support after tragic truck accident

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands released a message of support following a tragic truck accident.

The message states: “We are shocked and horrified by the terrible accident in Nieuw-Beijerland last night, where there were so many victims. It is an unimaginable sadness within a tight-knit community. The stricken families are in our thoughts, and we wish the wounded the strength they need on their road to recovery.”

Last night, a truck ran off a dyke straight into a barbecue organised by the local ice skating club. Dozens of people were present, and at least six people were killed, and seven were injured, including one in critical condition. Three of the fatal victims were reportedly from the same family; a mother, a son and a pregnant daughter-in-law.

The Spanish driver of the truck has been arrested. It was announced that he had not been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

One of those present told news outlet Rijnmond, “It felt like we were in a movie. We saw how people were being dragged, and we saw feet under the truck. These images will stay with us forever.” Another said, “Everyone was panicking; everyone tried to help. The ambulance crews were working away, but there were so many injured people.”
