His Majesty King Philippe has addressed the Belgian people in an exceptional television speech. King Philippe called on the nation to follow the instructions and measures that have been announced by the Belgian government and experts to prevent the further spread of coronavirus: “Our attitude here is essential, and it can save lives.”
At 7 pm this evening, His Majesty spoke to the Belgian people on the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country which he called “an unprecedented global health crisis in our country”. King Philippe acknowledged that these are difficult times and that great sacrifices are asked of the Belgians. His Majesty said: “This requires great adaptability from all of us. We have to do this not only for ourselves but also for the others and especially for the vulnerable among us.”
In Belgium, many measures have been taken to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus. These include the closing of restaurants and bars, school classes being suspended, people working from home as much as possible, and people in care institutions no longer receiving visitors. His Majesty had encouraging words for all of the groups of citizens that have been affected by these measures one way or another. The King said: “Mathilde and I think of each of you, especially those who are affected by the disease. We also empathize with the elderly who are isolated in their own home or in a care institution. For parents, it is not easy to reorganise their family. And young people are also asked to show a sense of responsibility.“
King Philippe continued his speech by pointing out the importance of this stage in the spread of the virus. He stated: “Belgium is currently at a crucial stage to stem the further spread of the coronavirus. (…) Our attitude here is essential and can save lives.”
His Majesty also thanked the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals that are working tirelessly to take care of patients who have been infected with the coronavirus. He praised their efforts and perseverance.
King Philippe of the Belgians ended his speech on a positive note: “The current situation reminds us of our vulnerability, but at the same time it brings out our strength. Each of us can help to overcome this crisis. The spontaneous calls of solidarity are heartwarming. I encourage them. This ordeal will make us stronger.”
This is only the second time in his reign that the King has addressed his people through an unexpected televised speech. The first time he gave such a speech was after the terrorist attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016.
