The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has sent a message of condolence to Queen Margrethe of Denmark following the death of her husband late last night.
In a message to The Queen, President Putin said: “Please accept our deepest condolences over the death of your husband, Prince Henrik. I sincerely share your sorrow.
“I wish you and all members of the Danish royal family strength and courage at this difficult time.”
The Russian President is just one of the world leaders to send a message of condolence to the Danish Royal Family following the news of Prince Henrik’s death.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, also sent his condolences this morning.
President Macron, who is also the Co-Prince of Andorra, said that Henrik promoted “the long and unalterable friendship between France and Denmark”.
Mr Macron said: “Born in Talence in France, a career diplomat, a travel lover, a connoisseur of the Far East, Henri de Monpezat, who became Prince Henrik of Denmark after his marriage to Queen Margrethe in 1967, had always been keen to promote long and unalterable friendship between France and Denmark, two nations whose alliance was never broken.”
He continued: “He made sure in particular that the French language remains employed at the Court and remains taught in Denmark, including high school Prince Henri, the largest French high school in Northern Europe, with 950 students”.
It was announced by the Royal Danish House on Wednesday that His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark has died at the age of 83. He was the husband of Queen Margrethe and father to Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
The Royal Danish House said in a statement, “His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died on Tuesday, February 13, at. 23.18 peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace.
“The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty The Queen and their two sons.”
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Queen Margrethe; son and daughter-in-law, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie; grandchildren, Prince Nikolai, Prince Felix, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Henrik, Prince Vincent, Princess Josephine and Princess Athena, as well as several nieces and nephews.
