While she began 2024 as the Crown Princess, Mary of Denmark has had an exceptionally busy year as she and King Frederik establish themselves as King and Queen. Unsurprisingly, Mary has continued to push her sartorial choices as she embraces her new role as Denmark’s Queen.
A queen consort for Denmark
There is no coronation for a Danish monarch, they are instead proclaimed by the Prime Minister from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. The new Danish queen chose Soeren Le Schmidt to design her first look for this new chapter. The designer created a look with a strong shoulderline, a belt at the waist, long sleeves, and a full skirt. He explained the detailed aspects of the gown, ”Additionally, it is constructed with a separate waist belt that has a voluminous drape from the waist, around the neck, and over one shoulder.
Queen Mary paired the gown with several pieces from the Danish Ruby Parure, a stunning set of ruby and diamond pieces. She wore the earrings from the parure, as well as the ring. The ruby and diamond brooch was pinned at her waist, with the hairpins securing her chignon. While she did not wear the tiara, she made fantastic use of this stunning set.
Representing Denmark on a State Visit
Frederik and Mary carried out several visits during their first year on the throne, and Mary continually put her best foot forward, both literally and figuratively.
Although she rarely has a fashion “miss”, Queen Mary’s ensemble when meeting the Norwegian Prime Minister highlights both her refined sense of style and her creativity. She paired a Jesper Hovring wrap-style blouse with an Emilia Wickstead skirt. The darker blue of the blouse contrasted beautifully with the skirt, a woven light blue with an ivory check pattern. The pencil skirt is further elevated with a side slit. The ensemble was elegant and light, a perfect spring look.
Celebrating bonds across Scandinavia
Although this was not a tiara event, this bold Carolina Herrera gown is one of Mary’s best ever looks. Worn in the shade Lacquer Red, the Carolina Herrera gown features cap sleeves, a full and softly pleated skirt, and a sash tied at the waist. Her red satin pumps from Rupert Sanderson feature a pearl buckle to add a small detail to the ensemble.
She wore this gorgeous look to the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassy complex in Berlin, where the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish royals gathered together. Although diplomatic dressing is common among royals, it was a great use of red.
