Much like Queen Máxima, Queen Mathilde loves a jewel tone, a print pattern and Natan. But comparing the women side-by-side ends there because while Queen Máxima always looks this side of vibrant and businesslike, Queen Mathilde’s styling has a timeless effect.
She wouldn’t be out of place in the 1960s competing for fashion headlines with Jacqueline Kennedy or Audrey Hepburn, so let’s take a look back at some of her fashion hits this year!
Naturally, it’s Natan for Christmas
Queen Mathilde was looking festively retro in a Nattan dress at the annual Christmas concert.
This berry red sleeveless dress with a twisted bodice and flared skirt was the perfect look for the start of the Belgian royals’ holiday calendar.
Ultimate class for National Day in Belgium
It’s one of the biggest events on the Belgian Royal Family’s calendar: National Day. The date, July 21st, also happens to be the anniversary of the accession of King Philippe as monarch. Queen Mathilde usually saves her best outfits for the National Day parade, and this year she looked stunning in an ivory silk Shantung couture dress by—you guessed it—Natan.
The designer added a wraparound built-in scarf effect that added a touch of retro glam that paired well with her wide-brimmed Philip Treacy hat.
Magnolias in the Cote d’Ivoire
When Queen Mathilde travelled to the Côte d’Ivoire in early March on behalf of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, she brought a flowery, colourful wardrobe with her.
While I’d love to add every single thing she wore in the Côte d’Ivoire to this ‘best-of’ list, I’ll limit myself to this beautiful Oscar de la Renta dress. I love the blush pink colour and the joyful magnolia pattern.
Proud – and stylish – mum at her daughter’s graduation
Once again Natan was called upon for Queen Mathilde’s outfit at Princess Elisabeth’s university graduation. In July, the Belgian royals travelled to Oxford to watch as the future queen completed her undergraduate studies (after a quick summer holiday, Princess Elisabeth would later start at Harvard!).
Queen Mathilde’s berry red Natan dress looked both stylish and summery with its pleated fabric and matching belt.
New Year, still Natan
Queen Mathilde’s love for Belgian designer Nattan is well-documented and he rarely leads her astray.
So when it came time to host a New Year’s reception for the Secretary General of NATO and other high-ranking NATO officials at the Royal Palace, the Queen of the Belgians turned to Nattan for her emerald silk jacket and skirt.
