A new stamp is set to be released to mark 50 years on the Danish throne for Queen Margrethe.
PostNord will issue the new stamp sheet on 2 January featuring three stamps to mark Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee.
Queen Margrethe is featured on two of the stamps; one stamp shows Queen Margrethe in the year she took the throne (1972), and another shows her now. The third stamp is the Royal Coat of Arms.
The 1972 photograph was taken by Rigmor Mydtskov, and the new image is taken by Tine Harden. The design of the stamp and engraving was done by Martin Mörck.
Queen Margrethe has featured on several Danish stamps throughout her life. She was first on a stamp in 1941 when she was sitting on the lap of her mother, Crown Princess Ingrid.
The Queen is the Danish monarch to have the most images on Danish stamps. In all, 162 Danish stamps have featured Her Majesty with 28 different paintings, drawings and photos used.
Queen Margrethe II will mark her Golden Jubilee on 14 January. She ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King Frederick IX, on that day in 1972 at the age of 31. She was the first female monarch under Denmark’s new Act of Succession that allowed for female ascension (until 1953, only men could sit on the Danish throne).
Margrethe was proclaimed Queen of Denmark on 15 January 1972 on Christiansborg Palace’s balcony by Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag.
